Grand Larceny
Grand Larceny involves stealing from another. What distinguishes Grand Larceny from Petit larceny is usually the dollar value involved, the type of item stolen, or the way in which it was stolen. For example, if a person steals something from another person with a value over one thousand dollars, that person could be charged with Grand larceny. However not all Grand Larceny charges are based on the amount involved, for example, the theft of secret scientific material would fall under Grand Larceny regardless of the monetary value involved. In New York, there are four different categories of Grand Larceny, all of which are felony charges. Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree is the least serious type of Grand Larceny. Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree is a class E Felony and involves thefts over $1000, or the theft of secret scientific material, or when the property consist of a credit card or debit card, or when the property is taken from the person of another, or obtained by extortion, or the property consist of a motor vehicle with a value in excess of one hundred dollars, or the theft of certain religious items valued of at least one hundred dollars, or the property consist of certain chemicals with the intent to manufacture methamphetamine.
Grand Larceny in the Third Degree involves the theft of property with a value that exceeds three thousand dollars. Grand Larceny in the Third Degree is a classified as a D felony.
Grand Larceny in the Second Degree involves the theft of property with a value that exceeds fifty thousand dollars, or where the property is obtained extortion by instilling fear that someone will cause physical injury to someone in the future, cause damage to property, or use or abuse of a position as a public servant by engaging in conduct within or related to his official duties, or by failing or refusing to perform an official duty, in such manner as to affect some person adversely.
Grand Larceny in the Second Degree is classified as a class C felony.
Grand Larceny in the First Degree involves the theft of property where the value of the property exceeds one million dollars.
Grand larceny in the first degree is a classified as a B felony.
